Doctors might use several types of hip surgery depending on breakage position, bone fragments position and patient’s age. Surgery for a hip fracture may include one of the following:
- Internal fixation. Internal hip fixation surgery (which is completed in cases wherein bones can be correctly aligned) stabilizes fractured bones with the help of rods, screws and plates. This type of surgery is typically for people who have fractures in which the
- Hip substitute surgery (also known as arthroplasty): Arthroplasty involves replacing the fractured hip parts with metal parts. A fractional hip replacement can be functional to replace broken thighbone (femur) upper part with artificial parts. In cases, where hip bone is injured further than fixation, entire hip replacement might have to be done (can be too because of arthritis or when injury causes inappropriate functioning of bone joints). This type of surgery is done more in cases of older patients.
- Invasive hip replacement surgery: Recent medical advancements have enabled surgeons to execute invasive hip replacement surgery. This involves use a smaller incision to reduce bleeding & rate-up healing time and avoids scar formation. Problem with this is that there are chances of complications such as infections, nerve wreckage, and inaccurate alignment of the replaced hit mechanism. So, you must ensure that patient gets the best surgeon who is expert and experienced. Research is still being done to see how well this surgery works in the long term.
- Reduction method: This type of treatment is given to younger patients and helps in receiving hip bone aligned and fixated inside. This involves stabilizing broken bones after fracture.
